Deddy Kusuma fell into art collecting almost by accident. An Architect by trade, Deddy formed an interest in paintings, which became a life-long hobby. After collecting art for over 35 years, Deddy Kusuma is the text book example of a true collector… Someone who buys for the love of it and will always find the room for just one more piece of art! Investing in art requires one simple philosophy as far as Deddy is concerned. Make sure you love what you buy, because if it decreases in value you can still appreciate it! We caught up with him at the Art Stage event in Singapore just as he bought his latest piece.

He uses pigments all derived from natural materials such as minerals, seashells and coral in a medium of animal-hide glue, and applies it all to Japanese mulberry paper. Recognised worldwide for his sublime waterfall and cliff images. Often monumental in scale and many are featured in prominent public spaces. His latest series uses fluorescent pigments!

Running An Auction at Christie’s

Accustomed to dealing with multi-million dollar pieces of art that inspire frenzied bidding from eager collector, Christie’s has recently embarked on an initiative to reach out to new collectors with auctions that provide a lower entry point for buyers with budgets too modest to secure a Picasso or Monet. We speak with a specialist of one of these auctions and see the action as it unfolds. Christie’s believes small collectors will eventually become big collectors; nurturing a culture of collecting and appreciating art is an important objective for this storied Auction House. Christie’s, a global name in the world of art!

a[n]d Museums – The National Gallery of Victoria Shifting Gear

Iconic motor vehicles and art galleries don’t usually go hand in hand.
But The National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne Australia has done something extraordinary… it runs an exhibition of cars solely for the purpose of appreciating them as pieces of art and design. From the late 1800’s through to the modern day, the exhibition features vehicles which are reflective of different eras of Australia’s history. Motor vehicles are designed to appeal to the trends of the time and therefore the vast range of designs have a fascinating appeal. Reaching out to a new audience, this is a first for the National Gallery of Victoria. We hear from the Gallery Curator that this will probably not be the last time they find the courage to do something different…
